New Educational App Focuses on Language Development for Children with Down Syndrome

Flashcards by Me™ turns your photos into tailored flashcards for intentional playtime.

AUSTIN, Texas, July 16, 2012 –Laughing Fairy, LLC, is proud to announce the availability of Flashcards by Me©, its first iPad app created to help children learn vocabulary, sight words and receptive language. Created by a mom of a son with Down syndrome, the app makes it simple for visual learners to have repeated practice with vocabulary and related cognitive concepts.

Engaging the child with pictures they know.  The App includes over 150 starter cards, however the parent can easily add their own images and record their own voice to say the name of each picture.

Building flexibility into the flash card concept. The card deck is customizable so that the parent can decide which cards to display based on certain attributes: first letter, color, shape, and category (clothing, food, toy, vehicle, music, sign language, emotion, action words, etc.)  For example, if their speech therapist has said to work on the letter ‘b’ this week, users can choose only cards that start with ‘b.’ Or if the child needs help with verbs they can set the card deck to only show ‘action words.’

Supporting learning with additional usability features. The parent can select whether the audio is automatically played; allowing for expressive picture identification. And for children who are visual learners or are learning to sight read the name of each item is included at the bottom of the card. But parents can choose to not display the text as well. The app is purposely designed with very few buttons for the child to accidentally select. The buttons are located at the top of the app so that children will not accidentally hit a button while they are trying to just hold the device.
